Access Violation w/ Fresh install
Hello,
I've read most of all the threads here and even gone as far as to google the newsgroups and such to see if anyone has a fix for this problem. This is my last hope before I give up. I'm at a loss. Today I bought the Gold Edition Gothic II PC game. I installed the 3 discs and tried to launch the game. I get the small box with Gothic II in red and below that a little window stating that it's creating a "virtual disk file system". After that, I see the JoWooD company logo, then a funny cow video. The splash sceen in red with the guy in armor and a big dragon is shown then I get a silent crash (little black box in my left corner CRT flashes for split second) and then this pops up: ![]() I've attempted to retry after turning off BOTH my AVG anti-virus and ZoneAlarm. )edit: I have also tried the trick with renaming file "Vdfs32g.exe" and I've installed the "gothic2_vdfs-patch.zip" patch. Gold Edition? Just try to install the addon NotR, too... should do the trick.

I have yet to install disc 4. I read in this forum (trust me I read almost every post) that once I install disc 4, it modifies the orginal game and I won't be able to play the 'first' part of II. I was going to hold off installing that disc until I finished it, then install the add on. (First time I've played any of the Gothic series and I was pretty stoked to get into the sequal due to the third coming out late this year)
Someone suggested I download the Gothic II demo and see if that runs.. but I get the EXACT same problem with it as well. : Any other suggestions??.. I'd like to solve this before my 15 day return policy expires in case I'm S.O.L. |

This happens every so often when I alt + tab out of gothic 2 + NotR to read a guide to help me using firefox. Data Execution Protection has Gothic2.exe added and turn on DEP for al programs and services except those I select chosen but this does not help.
Here the one I get.. Keep getting a crash to desktop with this error message (no alt + tabbing and no other programs loaded). It takes hours for it to happen and if I load say firefox in the background or alt + tab to other programs I get a crash the desktop but error says run time error. DEP [data execution prevention] is disabled for Gothic2.exe. ======================================= UNHANDLED EXCEPTION OCCURED ================================================== ==== ======================================= CRASH INFOS: ================================================== =================== Gothic II - 2.7 (eng), Parser Version: 50 User: -------, CPUType: 586, Mem: 512 MB total, 358 MB free Camera: Pos(11010.5674/1664.50342/-17994.5137), At(-0.196991503/-0.290550351/0.936362565) Startup Options: =============================================== CALLSTACK : ================================================== ============ 001B:403604D2 (0x00000000 0x296B0A64 0x1CA55410 0x00000000) <UNKNOWN> 001B:00755959 (0x00844DF0 0x004021E0 0x004C7240 0x004C7270) Gothic2.exe 001B:00000000 (0x74F18B56 0xFC468B2B 0x11606857 0x7E8D0040) Gothic2.exe Last edited by zx128k : 08-03-2006 at 01:49 |

I went ahead and installed disc 4 to see if it fixed it. Now I see the new add-on splash screen and it created the virtual file, played the two videos.. but STILL CRASHES WITH THE ACCESS VOLILATION.

I can't even START the game! Our problems are different. All I see of the 'game' is the first splash screen with the dragon and guy in armor. I have yet to see whats next.. movie or new game screen would be my guess.

![]() Make sure that none of your hardware is stressed (or overclocked beyond it's safe specifications) and that you have the right drivers installed (see FAQs). |

I'm going to try one last thing and down-scale my memory timings in my bios.
I've uninstalled it for the second time and will be installing it once more. Please verify that I should or shouldn't install the 4th disc. The FAQ on this error state that if I have the Gold edtion I need to install the 4th disc.. BUT from what I understand, that modifies the main Gothic II game so I'd like to hold off doing that until I finish the game first. |

Night of the Raven is rather an addIN than an addON... the addon just implements more NPCs, more quests, a new world (Jharkendar) and a higher difficulty ( ).You won't really "miss" some content of the game... just the good old "classic" feeling of G2. ![]() ps: Did you try some alternative catalyst driver versions for your graphic card? |

Well.. I can't seem to solve this problem and cannot get the game to run because of it.
Can I get some more help here?.. or do I need to excalate it to the next level? ie. submit a bug report?

User banned for proposal of using pirated copies. Remember: German law counts here.
@Pluvious Please post your dxdiag.txt and msinfo.nfo. If you want to know how to get these files take a look at the first post of the FAQ. And please tell us which mainboard you use, or if you know how to then install the latest drivers for it. Last edited by Glockenbeat : 13-03-2006 at 13:55 |
