Becoming King

I don't think you automatically become king if you kill the one in office--at least mine didn't....I play on medium difficulty...I've killed them in duels or out on the road way out of town (for some reason, the King of Hamburg always has pressing business in Bergen or some far off place after the council meetings (if he shows up to them that is) Lots of good ambush places along that road.

But what happens in my game is that you get a message "The King Is Dead---The Nobles Of the land are gathering together to select the new king" or something like that. Then you go to the council house and apply like any other position. I think any noble can apply. (I applied with my level 1 lease master and got in)

The order of succession when the king dies (as near as I can determine) is Oldest Surviving Child of the King or Queen. Nephews, Cousins, Brothers, Wives don't seem to be in line. If the King or queen is unmarried or childless when he or she dies the throne is open.

So always try to get some kids going if your king is childless
AND they have to be of age to be king (eligible to be a playable character)

Also it seems to be a bug, but luckily no matter how bad you abuse the king, he doesn't seem to use the "call the royal guards option" which would f*ck you up.

That's what I thought, but my character she did kill the king, and immediately she had the title of queen. Ironically, she was a lease master at the time too. Fortunately too since, she also was going to face several murder charges at a trial the next turn.

I laughed when the judge said "the defendent enjoys immunity, the trial is cancelled".

You're absolutely right, my notion was incorrect. Last night I had a character kill the queen after knocking her out in a fight out on the highway, and lo and behold she immediately became the new queen.

I think that the reason my characters didn't automatically assume the throne previously was that I'd either had them inquisitioned to death or killed them in a duel. So you get it automatically if you kill them illegaly, which is riskier on your part.

Another thing I learned about killing the royal (or anyone) at their mine is harder than it was before the add-on. With those frickin cannon towers, you take a lot of damage even if you're much stronger than the person you're trying to eliminate. Plus, after you knock them out, your player defaults to "attack building" and goes after the cannon tower. For those of you who have never done that, here's what happens---you lob a torch at it, doing one hit point of damage, while the cannon tower is raining hot lead down on you at considerably more damage points. So the trick is, knock the person out, and then keep clicking "move to" to anywhere out of the cannon tower's range. Then your character will get the silly notion of throwing torches at the cannon tower out of his head. Then, you can walk right up to the unconcious person and put them out of your misery. For some reason, the cannon towers don't attack you this time.

i've ended up with some misery lately...
I had 3 characters in my party, Father, Mother and Daughter. In total they had 2 daughters. Father was king, mother cardinal and daughter the other big title

So I decided this 76 year old mother wasn't much of use anymore and that I needed to get her other daughter get up the political ladder as quickly as possible (with the help of mommy up there).
So I dumped the mothercharacter and switched her with the daughter. Start climbing up the ladder but while doing so the father character dies (king). Guess who got the position of king? The mother character I had just dumped! Bah, really anoying!

Well serves you right for treating your mother like that

If your character is king/queen and dies will anyone in your family become king/queen or will the oldest child become king/queen?

Can someone confirm this? I'm about to kill off my 2 oldest sons so I can get the youngest child of mine to wear the crown

In this post it say that the Kings wife become the ruler after the King died. It kinda doesnt add up here

In my experience...whoever kills the king becomes the new king
If nobody does it passes down to the next successor in your family when he dies(wife, oldest son, etc)

Edit: If the throne was open...I'm not sure how or when the game choses a new king/queen...Personally I've never seen it vacant...I usually hold that title within the first turn it becomes available...and I have never lost it
