A little question about town development...

Hi all. I have a little question.

I started in a small village (New Ark). And the village developed into a town and so on...

The town developed to free city (My character is the current Soverreign) and stop. I build lots of new building but it didn't go any further. It stops for some 50 years now.

Will it expand to a larger city? (The title for ruler is "King") How can I speed it up?

By the way, I play the map that start with 2 villages (Mansfield and New Ark).

Sorry for my bad English.

Sometimes city growth may be limited because the city is landlocked, in that case, I don't think there is much you can do.

you can use sales tax to make a city grow. after the city accumulates a certain amount of $$$ it will expand. I usually sell in large bulk (like a few oxcarts of precious gems, rings or armour) and this almost instantly results in city expansion.

So it is good to have sales tax then? I thought that having no sales tax was the best for city development.

Thats funny ^^ ^^

Taxes go to the government...AKA - "the city"
As in real life no taxes only benefits the people...everything is cheaper...I guess in this game the consequence of no taxes is slower city development...however I've never tested that or looked at the coding so I'm not sure if its an accurate statement

So then should you put the tax at 10000000000000000000000000000000000% for better development?

Until someone shows me the code and proves otherwise I would have to say no...It is possible that the tax rate is coded so that the higher the tax rate the faster the city expands to the next level...however I think it's more likely that city expansion is either based on the number of building it has...or it is already predecided (a set number of turns and then it expands).

If the AI was smart...lower tax rates would encourage city growth...but unfortunately they aren't...So basically it's my opinion there is nothing you can do to encourage city growth.

However I utilize both...large towns and small. I start in the smallest town (so that is where my residence is) and apply for office right away (in small towns you reach the top of the pyramid faster) and I build my businesses in the large towns...much more business for thieves like me in big towns...but I also build armourers and alchemist shops too...both in the biggest city...It seems to work good for me...

Hope this helps

Well since we're actually talking about the city growing in functions, it seems smart after all. The city doesn't own the buildings on its territory, it's only a side effect, and this side effect isn't smart.

Well some buildings are automaticly built immediately AFTER the city grows, while in fact the city should grow constantly (but slower and slower) and the title of the city should only influence the functions. The side effect is the buildings that are built once you get the message a title has 'leveled'

city development is based on population also a city can be downgraded if the population goes down

So if you massmurder a good 40 people at the marketplace, changes are the city will actually downgrade? I never saw it happen, but sounds quite unusual :-)

Well in the CityLevel file in scripts it says something about the city be able shrink or Grow so I'd imagine it's possible.

Also on maps like Hansa, there can be only 1 Imperial City. So the other cities will never have offices higher than sovereign.
